As founding member and guitarist of both Joy Division and New Order, Bernard Sumner has been a pivotal figure in modern rock for four decades. Now, he’s set to share insight into his storied life and career with a forthcoming autobiography.

Due out September 18th via Bantam Press, Chapter And Verse (New Order, Joy Division And Me) offers a “vivid and illuminating” account of Sumner’s entire life. That includes his childhood growing up in Manchester, on to his co-founding of Joy Division with Peter Hook, segueing into his role in establishing New Order, his involvement in the fabled Hacienda nightclub, and his thoughts on the death of Ian Curtis.

A press release describes the tome as “sometimes moving, often hilarious and occasionally completely out of control, this is a tale populated by some of the most colorful and creative characters in music history.”

Chapter and Verse is not only Sumner’s first book, but also the first to cover the New Order era. Peter Hook, who has already written two autobiographies, has said he’s been hesitant to discuss New Order because “there’s so much bitterness. You don’t want it to become a bitchfest.”
