MANCHESTER-born
designer Peter Saville,
whose career kick-started with his landmark
album covers for Factory Records in the
seventies, is bringing a collection of his work
back to the city.
About 500 pieces, including his earliest album
covers for Joy Division and New Order,
consultancy work for fashion houses Dior and
Givenchy and fashion images for designers Stella
McCartney and Yohji Yamamoto, are to be shown in
city centre museum Urbis as part of a new
exhibition - The Peter Saville Show.
The display, which arrives from Tokyo in
December for the opening on
January 23 2004, is
backed by a New Order soundtrack to take Mancunians back to their Hacienda days.
It is part of the museum's effort to make its
image more attractive to the public, and Saville
says he can't wait to see their response.
"Growing up in Manchester has characterized my
work," he says. "It's rewarding to be asked back
to show the work in the city where its spirit
belongs. After all these years, I'm intrigued to
know what Manchester makes of it."

Since the late 1970s when he began his long
collaboration with Joy Division and New Order as
a co-founder of Factory Records, Peter Saville
has been a central figure in design and style
culture. The New York Times described him as
“the default creative director for a
style-obsessed generation”. This exhibition will
trace Saville’s career from the first Factory
poster onwards.

Revenge
| One True
Passion V2.0 February
2004 sees a deluxe 2xCD reissue of the sole
album by Revenge, the electro/hard rock hybrid
fronted by New Order
bass player Peter
Hook between 1989 and 1992. Following the
release of Technique in 1989, the four
members of New Order
spent time apart to pursue other ventures.
Always intended as a proper band rather than a
solo project, Hook was joined in Revenge by
Chris Jones and Dave Hicks, and later by David
Potts, who would remain with Hook as part of
Monaco five years later.
One True Passion was originally released
by Factory Records in June 1990 and spawned a
trio of singles: 7 Reasons, Pineapple
Face and Slave. Given free reign to
indulge Hook's leather-trousered rockist
instincts, the material welded hard rock to
dance beats, with a lyrical focus on sin and
redemption. The artwork was just as
contradictory, combining sleek
Peter Saville
typography with softcore imagery by Suze
Randall. The band toured like bastards, and in
January 1992 delivered the excellent ep Gun
World Porn, which offered a more laid back,
intimate feel.
Deleted after the messy collapse of Factory in
late 1992, One True Passion has now been
extensively reconfigured by
Peter Hook, and
includes Hook's new
recordings of the late period unreleased tracks
The Wilding and Televive. The set
comes with a full-length bonus disc, Be
Careful What You Wish For, with lots of rare
remixes and unreleased songs in demo form. All
30 tracks, over two hours of music, have been
carefully digitally remastered. The booklet
includes sleevenotes by
Joy Division/New Order biographer Claude
Flowers, and a new, highly candid interview with
Peter Hook on the background of the band.

BACK
IN BLACK: New Order |
MANCHESTER heroes
New Order are getting back to basics
as they work on their latest album, which is
currently being brought to life at the band's
Macclesfield studio.
Gillian Gilbert, who joined as keyboard player
at the time of the band's transition from
Joy Division
after Ian Curtis' death in 1980, is not working
on the new release and has instead been replaced
by an (unspecified) guest guitarist, joining
bass player Peter Hook and singer Bernard
Sumner.
Gilbert, partner of New
Order drummer Stephen Morris, didn't
join the group on their most recent tour.
A source says the latest
New Order sound
is similar to that which they produced in their
previous guise. "It is much more like Joy
Division again," he says.
"Gillian has left completely and they don't
write so many keyboard parts any more."

Peter
Hook, New Order: All-time Manchester
United XI Victoria Barrett
Sunday September 7, 2003
The Observer
As a kid I used to live near Old Trafford. We
couldn't afford to go in, but we used to hang
round the stadium. I was about 14 when I went to
my first match. It was when the Stretford End
used to riot. You spent most of the time
watching the fans rather than the match. None of
my family supported United and my mates in
Salford were City fans. We used to go to the
derbies together - there was always a lot of
trouble. My God, it was frightening. I guess
that was what stopped me from going, and once I
got into the band I lost the passion for it.
It's only recently that I've been settled enough
to buy a season ticket.
When I'm on tour, I always watch United's
matches on TV. Football is such a big part of my
life. There's a misconception that
New Order are all
mad about football because we did the World Cup
song. We are supporters but we're not rabid. It
was great to do 'World In
Motion' and meet the 1990 England team.
Gazza drank three bottles of champagne in 15
minutes. He didn't even bother with a glass!
I used to see Beckham in all the Manchester
clubs. He'd be there with Giggs and Andy Cole,
and he always used to chat to me about music. My
son never believes me. 'Beckham talking to you,
dad? No chance!' I haven't seen him in a while,
obviously, but my mate told me that when Fergie
kicked the boot that hit him on the head, he
[Beckham] came home so pissed-off that he took
it out on his bodyguards by sending them out to
the garden centre in Alderley Edge, where my
mate works, to buy tonnes of gravel to fill all
the holes in his drive.
My favourite player is George Best. I got his
old job at the Manchester Ship Canal Company. He
was there as a junior. The guy in the office
said to me on my first day: 'George Best used to
sit there. You've got his desk'. Later, we did
the theme tune to his television series (
Best and Marsh: The
Perfect Match ). I plucked up the courage to
meet Best after my girlfriend had been nagging
me for ages. I went over and said: 'Hiya George,
I'm Peter Hook from New
Order, we did the theme to your series.'
He said 'I know' and then turned away. It was
awful. I'll never do anything like that again.
I'll stick to watching my football heroes
instead.
'True to Form' by Hybrid and

Records) is out on 8 Sept.

Vitamin news...
Vitamin Records will be releasing a very special
tribute to NO/JD
next month entitled “The
String Quartet To New Order & Joy Division”.
The album is due in stores (US)
Aug 12, 2003.
TAKEN FROM
http://www.thetributeto.com/NOJD/ (audio
clips also available)
The
ethereal yet somber essence of post-punk icons
Joy Division and the melodic symmetry of synth-pop
legends New Order is beautifully captured in
The String Quartet Tribute to New Order and Joy
Division. The bittersweet sounds of the
violins, viola and cello create the perfect
setting for such classics as “Love Will Tear
Us Apart,” “Blue Monday,” “She’s Lost Control,”
“Bizarre Love Triangle” and more. Performed
with an emotionally charged precision that both
skews and complements the original compositions,
The String Quartet Tribute to New Order and
Joy Division is a truly cathartic musical
experience.

More news
from London:
From
the Press Release: The
world's best bass player,
Peter Hook (New
Order) has co-produced and collaborated
exclusively with Hybrid, on the two
killer tracks 'True To Form' and 'Higher than a
Skyscraper'. Those two tracks will be release on
Hybrid new album 'Morning Sci-Fi'' set to
be release in UK through Distinct'ive Records on
21st July 2003.
Hybrid release the first single 'True to Form'
on 7th July 2003.
Hooky and Hybrid???:
This ingenious step came to fruition from an
after hours rant between
Hooky and
Richard (head honcho of Distinct'ive Records)
"None of these bloody dance remixers ever use my
bass lines," argued
Hook. "I put in all this time and
effort and they use Bernard's vocals but they
don't bloody use my bass." The following
week Hybrid sent over a couple of tracks
to Peter Hook,
he liked the tracks so much, he rang back and
agreed not only to play his "bloody bass'
but to co-produce and collaborate on both 'True
To Form' and 'Higher than a skyscraper'...the
rest is history!
Peter Hook will
make his debut stage appearance with Hybrid at:
Glastonbury
on 29th June,
Fabriclive on 15th August
and aboard the infamous Distinctt'ive Boat party
on 16th August.

IAN CURTIS 1956 - 1980
|
Ian
Curtis - Gone but not forgotten |
It was 23 years ago today that IAN CURTIS
ended his life, aged 23.
The driving force behind Joy Division's
dark vision, he hanged himself in his Macclesfield home as the band
rested between a European and American tour. Iggy Pop's 'The Idiot'
was found on his turntable alongside a note which read "at this very
moment, I wish I were dead. I just can't cope anymore".
For those who never been to Macclesfield, UK to visit Ian
Curtis grave. Some pictures taken by Craig Barcelo with a story
behind it:
"It was a gray overcast day, perfect for the kind
of sight seeing we were doing. Also the village of Macclesfield is VERY
SMALL, everybody obviously knows each other. The grounds keeper at the
crematorium was giving me a hard time. he said something like (in a very
thick Scottish brogue) "His parents still come here every now and
then and take away all the crap that the fans leave behind". From what
I gathered from the director of the place, Ian's
grave is a very popular tourist sight for fans all over the world.

designmuseum.org
news...
Since the late 1970s when he began his long
collaboration with Joy Division and New Order as
a co-founder of Factory Records, Peter Saville
has been a central figure in design and style
culture. The New York Times described him as
“the default creative director for a
style-obsessed generation”. This exhibition will
trace Saville’s career from the first Factory
poster onwards.
As well as presenting his most important
projects together for the first time, The Peter
Saville Show will trace their development from
preliminary notes and sketches – such as the
graph paper on which he composed the colour code
on the Power, Corruption And Lies album cover
for New Order –
through works-in-progress and discarded concepts
to the finished work.
Born
in Manchester in 1955, Peter Saville studied
graphic design there and then became art
director of Factory. He was given complete
freedom to develop the label’s identity and
artwork. As well as continuing his work with
New Order, Saville
has since created equally iconic graphics for
other acts including Roxy Music, Suede, Pulp and
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark.
He is also renowned for his work for fashion
labels such as Christian Dior, Yohji Yamamoto,

Reviews HMV.CO.UK
APRIL 2003
After
12 years of sanctions, a lifetime of oppression
and now the effects of war, the crisis for
Iraq's 13 million children is on-going. Children
in Iraq today face an uncertain future,
traumatised by war and demoralised by the slow,
dull ache of grinding poverty.
Iraq's healthcare system is in tatters.
Primary school attendance is at an all-time low.
Infant mortality is in free-fall. Chronic
malnutrition is already affecting every fourth
child under five years old. Up to half a million
children have died since the first Gulf War
ended. And that was before the second Gulf War
even began - a conflict, which like all
conflicts, will affect children more acutely
than anyone.
This album of exclusive tracks has
been recorded against the clock as the war in
Iraq is being fought. In just three weeks, some
of the greatest names on the British music scene
have altered their schedules and crammed into
studios across the world to be a part of Hope.
Each artist involved, has selected a track, that
means something to them at the present time of
crisis. You will find hope, love, anger and
confusion both in the lyrics and in the music.
Iraq's real hope is its children. By
investing in them you are investing not only in
the future of Iraq but in all of our hopes for a
peaceful world.
All proceeds from this album will go to
children in Iraq. War Child's CEO, Norman
Sheehan is currently conducting a needs
assessment in the conflict zone. If there is a
food emergency then funds can be diverted there,
but the expectation is the USA and Europe will
meet much of this need. War Child's key aim is
to fund psycho-social programs for children
traumatised by war (similar to their pioneering
work in Bosnia).

Mirror peace CD
to raise money for Iraqi children
By Ros
Wynne-Jones
THE Daily Mirror is
joining the charity War Child to produce an
album of peace songs to raise funds for children
in Iraq.
The
record, called Hope, will feature stars
including David Bowie, George Michael and
New Order.
Many
have written songs specially for it. Others will
cover classic peace songs.
Yusuf
Islam - formerly singer-songwriter Cat Stevens -
has recorded his first song in English in 30
years.
Major
record label WEA will produce and distribute the
album, which will be in the shops next month,
without taking a profit.
War
Child will start to spend the money it raises
after the first week of sales.
The
charity's James Topham said last night: "The
children in Iraq are already deeply traumatised
after 12 years of sanctions and the impending
conflict will be truly devastating.
"With a
recent survey showing that 40 per cent of
children in Iraq are unable to see the point in
living, restoring hope to their lives will be
one of the important things we can do."
"War
Child have staff on the ground preparing for the
inevitable humanitarian disaster and have
already put in place plans for helping children
rebuild their lives after the war.
"The
money from this record will allow us to begin
that work immediately."
Aid
agencies fear more than 10million Iraqis may
starve if war goes ahead with more than 60 per
cent of the population facing hunger.
Experts
predict at least 500,000 Iraqis will be affected
as a direct result of war, with up to 80,000
deaths.
Charities estimate there will be two million
refugees with one million Iraqis displaced
inside the country.
Speaking from the Iraqi border, War Child chief
executive Norman Sheehan said he feared the
worst.
"I hope
I am very wrong but the more time I spend here,
the more I fear we are going to witness an
appalling level of suffering.
"After
the 12 years of stress and trauma that the Iraqi
children have gone through, you could put 1,000
War Childs into Iraq and still not meet all the
needs.
"Once
we are allowed into the country we need to start
work as soon as possible.
"This
album will help us work quickly to do what we
can to help the children of Iraq."
The
album follows the success of a similar one,
called Help!, released by War Child in 1995 to
raise money for children in Bosnia.
It went
straight into the charts at No1 after only one
day's sales, becoming the fastest recorded
studio album as well as the fastest No1 - and
raising nearly £2million for humanitarian
agencies in the area.
Mr
Topham said: "The response from musicians has
been fantastic for this new record.
"Once
again we are delighted to be working closely
with the Daily Mirror on such an important
project."

Some interesting comments about Electronic
and Barney.
http://www.undercover.com.au/idol/johnnymarr.html
The new Johnny Marr and the Healers album Boomslang is out through
iMusic / Shock
From The Smiths, to Electronic, The The to The
Pretenders, writing with Beth Orton or working
along Kirsty MacColl, Johnny Marr has never been
away from the British Music Scene.
The Smiths are now legendary even though they
only had a very short life span. Electronic
(with New Order's Bernard Sumner was innovative)
and now with Zac Starkey (The Who) and Alonza
Bevan (Kula Shaker), Marr is back writing and
performing rock.
Johnny Marr talked to Undercover Media's Paul
Cashmere
PC: And a lot of the songs on the album were
written before you put The Healers together.
JM: I wrote some of them. Some date way back but
most of the songs came together around the time
The Healers got together. It is an interesting
synchronicity. I started to write a certain kind
of song at the end of the Electronic album that
could only be performed by a group of people
playing and standing together at the same time.
You couldn't really design it with a computer.
At that same time I met Zac (Starkey) and we
started to play with musicians but there were a
couple of tracks on that last Electronic album
that started off as Healers songs really. The
songs and the people came together at the same
time.
PC: With the songwriting in The Smiths it was
pretty much you are Morrissey equally and then
in Electronic with was you and Bernard (Sumner).
This time writing yourself did you have a
different mindset that went into the creative
process?
JM: Yeah there is. It is more difficult but
ultimately more rewarding. I'd like to write a
bit more with the band. "Inbetweens' was written
with the band musically because it came out of a
jam. That was good fun for me. In the past, the
first 20 years of my professional life (I don't
like using the word 'career', it doesn't suit
me). Whatever it is I have been doing for these
20 years has been me writing musical backing
tracks and not really knowing how it is going to
turn out, particularly when you are working with
Bernard Sumner or Kirsty MacColl. In the early
days it was Morrissey obviously. That was fine
by me. But now I kind of want the vocals and the
lyrics to be coming from the same place. I want
it all to have the same underlining atmosphere.
'You Are The Magic', 'Bangin' On' and 'Last
Ride' wouldn't have come out the way they did
had I not written the lyrics. The lyrics are
specifically related to the music.
PC: Electronic is another example of three great
albums that fit into their own category and
don't cross over with any of the other work.
JM: Right, yeah. I like to keep moving on. For
me, records and groups are very much photo
albums of periods of your life. I try my hardest
to keep myself interested as a person. Certainly
in music, but also in life and learning stuff.
Not kind of getting stagnant. Hopefully that is
reflected in the music. I can't imagine trading
on the same sound that I had when I was 23. When
that kind of thing crops up I guess that is what
people think I should sound like. I'm cool with
that too. It is just like coming back through a
town. It is like a journey. I am just lucky that
I get to document my journey with concerts and
records. I don't know any other life. I have
been doing it since I was 14.
PC: Did Electronic come to a natural conclusion?
JM: Yeah. It did. I am really proud that we
still got a friendship that is really strong as
I do with Matt Johnson and Chrissie Hynde and
pretty much everyone I've worked with. I think
with Electronic we did as much as we were ever
going to do. My only regret is that Electronic
didn't put out more records. We were together
every single day, more than anyone else I have
ever been involved with. I think this idea that
we were a project and would get together every
couple of years and make a project is false. In
fact we were together every single day. When we
took a break from working and being in the
studio and writing these beats and these
melodies, we would get on a boat and go sailing
together. I have never been closer to anyone
than I was with Bernard. I'm glad that we called
it a day in a cool way. The last Electronic
album had a couple of songs that could have
easily been Healers songs. I think it was really
right that New Order got back together when they
did before it became too late. It is all good.
PC: Have you seen the movie 24 Hour Party
People?
JM: Yes I have.
PC: What did you think?
JM: I was absolutely amazed that it was as good
as it was. I was expecting it to be dire. The
feeling I got from the movie overall was a
message of loyalty and idealism and a sense of
the ridiculous. Factory Records was all those
things. Thank God somebody was that ridiculous
because sometimes that is the only way you get
things moving. Obviously it is weird to see some
events compressed. There is a scenario where
maybe Martin Hannett said a thing to one of the
Happy Mondays in a certain place when I knew
that thing was said to a member of Joy Division
in a completely different place. It doesn't
matter because the point was made. I found it
quite poignant.
PC: Where were you when that story took place?
JM: It was a long time period. In '82 I was
putting The Smiths together. I was actually at
the Hacienda the night it opened and it wasn't
exactly like it was portrayed in the film. There
were more people there and it was also very
dark. The first ever session I did was with
Bernard Sumner for Mike Pickering's band the
Quando Quando. I was very involved with Factory.
The guy I lived with was one of the DJs. I knew
Tony (Wilson) really well. I was around and
quite heavily involved. Even to this day a lot
of me mates were Factory artists. People like
New Order and a couple of the Happy Mondays.

"Return to New York"
- 22
February 03
Neil and Chris (with programmer Pete Gleadall) made their DJ debut last
night at 'Return to New York' at the Great
Eastern Hotel in London.
Playing a set of contemporary and vintage electro music,
they also gave the first spins of three new
records they have recently made: 'Walking on thin ice'
(PSB Electro mix) by Yoko Ono, 'Love to love you, baby' (Kiki Kokova)
and 'Hooked on radiation' (PSB Orange Alert mix) by
Atomizer.
Neil and Chris began their set with the song 'We're the Pet Shop Boys' by
the American electronic singer/songwriter, My
Robot Friend.
Pet Shop Boys were followed last night by New Order's
Bernard Sumner and
Peter Hook. No further DJ dates are
planned by Neil and Chris but a good time was had by
all. (Chris's new long, blond hair surprising many.)"
Superb night, lots of bad mixing (!), Barney in glasses and wolf whistling,
dissing Arsenal/southerners/etc.

To Celebrate The
Birthday Of Our Favorite Bass Player, Peter Hook
"Hooky" Today:
EXCLUSIVE PETER
HOOK INTERVIEW
This is an
exclusivity just for you, I faxed some questions to Hooky and there it is for
your own pleasure answered January 22, 2003.
Thanks to
J. Scott for helping me on the questions.
Thanks to
A. Robinson and Peter Hook
for their time.
Q: What are you up to today
? BTW congratulation on your Musos Award, look
like you had a great time at the
ceremony.
Today we are writing. It's very odd, but things are going well, looks
like we've finally sussed how to do it at last.
The award was nice, about time to. Mani phoned me up to ask how I'd
fixed it. Cheeky bastard! We had a laugh. I
didn't like the way they were being
irreverant about it, the presenters that is. I was over the moon
to get it, and they
were taking the piss. Anyway I told Johnny Vegas to shut it or
words to that effect, and he was so shocked he went back stage,
drank half a bottle of whisky in one go, came
back and promptly spewed all over the podium.
That's what I call humour. Beat that monkey.
Q: Hooky, Can you keep me up to date on what
we shall expect from New Order
next??? Any live date anytime soon?
Well we are doing our next LP when it's ready it'll be ready. I can't
see us gigging soon. It would be nice, wouldn't I
just love it. But always say you never
know.
Q: Well the big talk lately on my message
board are the boxset "Retro" and
DVD "Finsbury Park". Can I get some
feedback on those release?
Retro was to finish off Rob's idea for a boxset. The end result was
completely different to the initial idea. But that's how it had
to be. I preferred the original concept
myself. But I must admit I liked the finished
product. I thought Miranda, John, Bobby, and Mike did a great job,
so did Andy Robinson and Ken Niblock.
Finsbury Park was a great gig, sound and atmosphere. So
I was happy to see it go out. The edits were a
bit fast for me, I must be gatting old. I
prefer the bonus stuff Andy did.
Q: The last time we spoke to you, the band
were preparing for their first
major release in several years. How
do you feel personally about the varied
success of the singles and of course
the album "Get Ready"?
Varied success..what are you on about? I think we did really well single
wise. Come on we aren't Blue are we? The album was great and even
though I was nervous at first I was very happy
with it's success and I think the next one
will be even better.
Q: For many of the fans
reading this, you are the main attraction within New
Order. Are you comfortable with this
role? In the early 80's you often
appeared aloof, on occasions
performing with your back to the audience.
Now
you are very much centre stage &
appear on the surface at least to relish
the adoration of the crowd. What is
it really like looking out over the fans
and feeling the adoration of these
complete strangers?
You are full of compliments David aren't you! I'm just happy doing what
I do. My only wish is to do more of it. I'd love to play,
anywhere, anytime, suggestions great fully
received. In the 80s I was nervous and unsure,
I'm not anymore. It was considered as aloofness. I remember Rob
Gretton saying to Barney and me keep your mouth shut
and everyone will think you've got
something to say! I'm just a show off I suppose, but it's
the musics fault, honest guv. It makes me feel like running
around, showing off, pushing me guitar into
complete strangers faces, fighting with them,
then drinking like a viking, gatting twatted like a dickhead then
waking up and saying never again.
Then getting on a bus full of people saying never
again and setting off to somewhere else to do it all again. I
must be simple.
Q: At the time of writing, "24 Hour Party
People" was just about to go on
general release. Are you happy with
the portrayal of yourself and the
history of the Factory years in
general? Is the film itself fairly accurate
in terms of the
personalities and the events
portrayed?
24 hours was OK. I'm abit fed up with it really. The soundtrack CD was
great, that's all that really matters. When I heard Tony and
Peter Saville were doing a commentary for it I
tried to track down Alan Erasmus to send him
along, but I couldn't find him, never mind. That would have been quite
interesting. Oh by the way if anyone knows where Tunnelvision
from Blackpool are I've found your master
tape, please get in touch. So back to the
film. It isn't accurate, but it is entertaining, so there. I had a row
with Tony a while back, because he has done his book to mirror
the film eg wrong. When I asked him why he
said Hooky you must realise the myth is
greater than the reality I told him to f!!! off of course but then again
Tony's myth was always greater than his reality as Trotsky once
said.
Q: What did you think of
Kylie performing her mix of "Can't Get you Out Of
My Head" & "Blue Monday" at the
Brits this year?
I thought Kylie was great. I didn't know about it and got the shock of
my life when I saw it. Nicely though. My mate
Twinney rang me and said "have you heard that
bird on the telly, she's ripping you off big style" ha ha I
liked that. No but it is a great complement and we are thinking
of doing a new backing track to regret crossed
with I should be so lucky to pay her
back.
Q: Will Phil C. continue to perform as part
of New Orders' live set up? Will
he join the band on the new album???
Phil is helping us when we can drag him out of LA. We'll have to wait
and see what happens, but his comb and tissue
solos have to be seen and heard to be
believed.
Q: When my friend Jonathan
spoke with him some months ago immediately after
one of the Manchester gigs, he
seemed almost overwhelmed by the
experience
of playing with the band. Do you think that
his inclusion on the tour
breathed a new life into New Order?
You appear to have a very good on-stage
relationship with him. Is it a lot
of fun
having some young blood in the
band to play along with?
Yea I like him. He reminds me of me when I was younger, and he's dead
greatful to us for dragging him out of the gutter so he can play
with a real band. Not a band like that
Marillion, cause there was always something
dead fishy about them.
Q: Many concern about Gillian and Steve's
baby, is the baby better or still
very ill?? Naturally we all miss
Gillian, any update one when she may join
the band live again. Will she be
present on the next album???
That's a private family matter so f!!! off David.
Q: Your relationship with the Chemical
Brothers, a band who happily and
quite regularly speak of New Order
in the highest terms seems stronger than
ever. How did this first come about
and do you see any further collaboration
with them?
We've no plans for any collaborations as yet. But Bernard and I are
DJing Arthur Bakers birthday party in London,
Feb 22 at the Great Eastern Hotel. New Order
vs The Pet Shop Boys. We're going to kill them unless they hit us
with their handbags, Seriously though I thought the new mix of
Confusion was great and the video too. We all
looked so young but who was that funny looking
boy scout in the shorts. A straggler from A Certain Ratio?
Q: The internet has provided the perfect
platform for fans of many bands
throughout the world & there are
many sites devoted to New Order & Joy
Division. Do you ever look at these
pages & what if any is your opinion in
general of such sites?
I do look at the internet occasionally most of the sites seem good
especially yours David!!! Heather and Jack keep me informed of
anything interesting. We do appreciate the
fans interest and it's easy to keep them
informed. Maybe I could do a monthly diary or
something for them with a problem page, and
could share interesting gossip
with them. Funnily enough
the first one I have a wonderful story about Jayne Houghton and
Arthur Baker.
Q: Further to that question,
what do you think of the availability of
bootleg tracks, several of which
remain unreleased
or those made available
long before their scheduled release
dates? I'm thinking in particular of the
virtual frenzy
created over the "Crystal" & "60
MPH" mp3 files that were
floating around the net some 9
months before their eventual release?
Bootlegs are OK. I don't mind them. I almost got caught doing one
myself. Killing Joke live on one side and
Bauhaus with Nico on he other.

Info from

The new
HYBRID album is almost finished - it's 99% there.
The last thing to do will be a collaboration with New Order's
Peter Hook. He's doing the bass lines for a
couple of the tracks for the album.
Basically Peter is in the studios with Hybrid at
the moment putting the bass lines onto two of their tracks.

Check it out....Very good interview plus a great
contest
http://www.playlouder.com/feature/1188neworder/
New Order might be widely
regarded as one of the most innovative British pop groups of the last
two decades, but they still have no idea what the secret of their
success is. Holed up in drummer Stephen Morris's Macclesfield studio,
they crack jokes about their ex-label mates, reminisce about their back
catalogue and speculate about their future. For the record, Hooky would
like to move to Ibiza whilst Bernard and Stephen can't imagine ever
leaving Manchester. Determined to find out what's kept them together for
seven albums, twenty-something singles and a World Cup anthem,
PLAYLOUDER grilled them about everything from Smashing Pumpkins to Joy
Division.
You've just released a brilliant
box-set containing four CDs of singles, B-sides, rarities, remixes and
live performances. Any personal highlights?
HOOKY: I think the best thing about Retro is it sounds like a set of
car-tapes made by a mate. You wouldn't have chosen the same songs or put
them in the same order, but they actually work really well. My favourite
is the bonus disc that comes with the first three thousand box-sets
because it's just a really weird collection of tracks.
BERNARD: Listening to Retro is a bit like watching 24 Hour Party
People - it's hard to get a perspective because we've played those songs
so many times. I don't mind listening to the early songs, but the
quality of some of the live recordings really bug me. They're so tinny
and metallic.
STEPHEN: I don't play box-sets, I just read the booklets. As a
retrospective of our career however, I think it's a pretty good
selection of songs.
Have you composed any new material
since 2001's Get Ready?
BERNARD: We've just started work on the next album and it's going
quite well. The first week's always a bit tricky but we seem to have got
into the flow now.
HOOKY: I think it's easier than before: everyone seems very laid-back
and relaxed. In the past that would have meant we haven't got a clue
what we're gonna do, but we've been working really hard the last three
weeks and we've got a few good ideas up and running. We haven't
confirmed it yet, but we're hoping to work with Steve Osbourne again.
He's a good producer and he understands where we're coming from.
BERNARD: The last album was very, very layered, so it'd be nice to do
a more dense and empty sounding one this time.
How did you come to hook up with Billy
Corgan on Get Ready?
HOOKY: Billy's been an old friend of mine for years. The first time I
met him he was fifteen and thinking of starting a band. A few years
later, a friend dragged me to see a new band called Smashing Pumpkins at
International 2 in Manchester. I had no idea it was Billy's band until I
saw him at the front of the stage and I was totally blown away. We've
socialized on and off since then and when it came to recording Get
Ready, Bernard told me "I keep hearing Billy Corgan on this track, how
could we get in touch with him?" I patted him on the back and said "I'll
just get my address book and phone him". Being an old New Order fan, he
was over the moon to play with his heroes.
He's been vilified as a misanthropic
control freak by the NME. What was he like in the studio?
HOOKY: I know he's supposed to be hell to work with because Flood
told us he nearly gave up producing after Mellon Collie and The Infinite
Sadness, but we never saw that side of him. He was just very focused and
conscientious.
BERNARD: We don't invite many people to collaborate with us, but I'd
definitely like to play with Billy again. I think he has a really
distinctive voice and a great way with melodies. He's also pretty
upfront about his hang-ups; he once told me he's so analytical he
sometimes sits and analyses how analytical he is.
HOOKY: I can believe that. I'd like to work with him again too, but
if Sharon Osbourne can't handle him no-one fucking can!
Speaking of global celebrities, what
was it like touring with Eminem's public enemy (Moby) last summer?
BERNARD: It was good fun. Stephen and I had a great time, but Hooky
caught a horrible fever and spent the entire tour feeling violently ill.
HOOKY: I lost two and a half stone in three days and just wanted to
be at home tucked up in bed. Moby was very understanding, but the shows
weren't up to our usual standard. In fact, we bombed most nights. His
audience were very young and to tell you the truth, I don't think many
of them even knew who we were. They were all there to see Outkast or
Baldy!
BERNARD: The last concert in LA was the best because we got John
Frusciante from Red Hot Chilli Peppers to come on stage with us and
perform "New Dawn Fades". Unfortunately, Moby didn't play it until the
end of the set and we got completely twatted whilst we were waiting. Did
we get up to any mischief backstage? I've heard Moby's very frisky in
the old trouser department but we didn't witness anything untowards.
Both Moby and Billy Corgan have been
huge Joy Division fans since they were kids. How do you feel about the
volume of artists that have cited Closer or Unknown Pleasures as their
biggest influence?
BERNARD: It's not something we've ever thought about. I suppose it's
flattering that people still mention those records, but to be honest we
never really discuss our music or the impact it has on other people...
That's the strange thing about New Order / Joy Division - we've been
together over twenty-five years but we've never sat down and actually
talked about our music or what direction we want it to go in. We just go
in the studio and play.
Finally, what did you think of 24 Hour
Party People?
STEPHEN: It's hard to say because I never thought anyone would make a
film about a part of my life. I did find certain scenes entertaining,
but I also sat there thinking "that never happened" and "why didn't they
include such and such?" It was a strange experience.
HOOKY: The whole film was really strange and surreal. I think we
enjoyed it as much as we could do considering the themes involved. There
was a lot of artistic license used, but to be honest the whole Factory
and Hacienda thing is still so close to us it's hard to be objective.
BERNARD: The bits about the Mondays and Tony Wilson made me laugh and
it was good to see the story of the Hacienda being told in a way. I just
wish the team behind it had spoken to us more beforehand... I'd like to
see the full, unabridged version one day.
HOOKY: I think the one thing Michael Winterbottom fucked up was the
final scene. It should have been Tony Wilson dressed up as Jesus not
Steve Coogan. That would have been the perfect ending and the perfect
cameo for Tony.

Check out Fergie's show from last Friday night on BBC Radio One at

It features a Lee Coombs DJ set where he spins a new remix of
Crystal. It is similar to his main remix,
but it adds some more parts, including a more prominent
Hooky bass. It segues quite well into his
remix of Paul Oakenfold's Time Of Your Life. Hurry .

Q's latest top 10: Top 10 World Changing Songs. Blue
Monday is #9.
LONDON, England (Reuters) --
An Elvis Presley cover version of an obscure
blues track has been voted the song which did most to change the world.
"That's All Right" was recorded by Elvis as a teenager in 1954 during a
jam session in Memphis. The track launched the King's career and is
regarded by many as marking the start of rock 'n' roll.
A panel of music journalists, commissioned by Britain's Q Magazine, put
"That's All Right" top of a list of "100 ground-breaking, world-altering
songs that changed music and the world forever."
It beat dozens of better known tracks, including The Beatles' "I Wanna
Hold Your Hand," Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Good Vibrations"
by the Beach Boys.
"I Wanna Hold Your Hand," the song which launched The Beatles in the
United States, came second, while the Sex Pistols' provocative punk anthem
"God Save the Queen" was third.
The results of the poll raised a few eyebrows.
" 'That's All Right' is a wonderful track and we all hail it for
starting Elvis's recording career, but it didn't change anything," veteran
music journalist Paul Gambaccini told BBC TV. Among Gambaccini's books is
a volume on the top 200 albums of all time.
Grunge gurus Nirvana were fifth with "Smells like Teen Spirit" while
British band New Order came in ninth
with their celebrated dance track "Blue Monday"
-- the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time.

Info from Tom Z.
Designer Peter Saville spent the
early part of his career designing record sleeves for the Factory label
and has produced sleeves for the likes of Joy
Divison, New Order and also OMD -
including the classic sleeves for Electricity, OMITD and Architecture
And Morality. Designed By Peter Saville is
a new book that collects his work and covers design in a variety of
fields including music, fashion, advertising and art. The book also
features a series of essays on Peter Saville's
work by, amongst others, Peter York, Paul Morley
and Miranda Sawyer.

Peter Saville is perhaps the most
influential graphic designer of his generation. Best-known for his
seminal record covers for Joy Division and New Order, Saville has also
art directed catalogues and advertisements for fashion brands such as
Yohji Yamamoto and Dior, and created corporate identities for Givenchy,
Mandarina Duck and London's Whitechapel gallery. More recently he has
designed CDs for Pulp and Suede, and art directed the print campaign for
Stella McCartney.
'Designed by Peter Saville' is the first book of his work. Comprising
design for music, fashion, advertising and art, it chronicles his design
from 1978 to the present. The book includes a comprehensive interview by
Christopher Wilson as well as essays by style writer Peter York, music
critics Paul Morley and Miranda Sawyer, and design critics Rick Poynor,
Emily King, and Peter Hall.
Saville was recently voted both 'most admired individual working in the
creative industries' and 'best graphic designer' in a peer pool
conducted by Creative Review. The intensity and apparent timelessness of
his work has ensured his cult status for 25 years.
Quotations from the book:
The selection of images shown in this book are the greatest hits of a
career that is composed of almost nothing but. While the Joy Division
and New Order album sleeves are the best-known of his early work, these
are fleshed out by an improbably large proportion of that era's
memorable record sleeves. For anyone born in the mid- to late-sixties,
looking through the work is an unerringly nostalgic experience.
- Emily King
There's a certain sadness in what Saville does that gives gravitas. He
removes things to try and discover what its core values are, and he does
that in a very beautiful way. Although he is the best as what he does,
he doesn't think that's enough.
-Nick Knight
Like the proverbial tropical butterfly that flaps its wings, setting off
a tornado in another part of the world, Saville's period of intense
activity for Yohji Yamamoto brought about a mini tempest in the world of
fashion communication. It introduced a much-aped photographic lexicon
and acquainted the fashion world with the benefits of a refined level of
graphic design.
- Peter Hall
Peter Saville, for a time, was a genius, which is not to say he isn't
one now, just that you only really notice that he was a genius because
of the way his twenty year-old work does not look twenty years old, but
somehow a hundred years old and/or a day old and yet something out of
now or of tomorrow.
- Paul Morley
Saville's method, then as now, lies in fixing on a style or look
slightly ahead of popular taste. He achieves the sort of ambiguity and
complexity of resonance more usually associated with art. His idealism
imbues the best of his record sleeve designs with something truly
special in the ephemeral worlds of pop music and packaging: the power to
last.
Rick Poynor
What Saville did was to make the ordinary (record sleeves, posters)
gorgeous; he believed we should have the best. And since he did it
within the surrounds of pop music, everyone's first introduction to art
and the one we're most obsessive about, he hit us early and in the
heart.
- Miranda Sawyer
Peter Saville has always been designed by Peter Saville.
